Mike Hawthorn at the wheel of his ‘Merceater’ D-Type in the early stages of his victorious 1955 Le Mans 24hrs race. The race featured an intense battle between the 3 main constructors; Hawthorn in the Jaguar, Fangio’s Mercedes & Castellotti’s Ferrari (both of whom you can see in the D-Types reflection).
Although Hawthorn took first place and marked an important step in Jaguar’s racing history, the win was a hollow one. The race also included the horror crash of Pierre Levegh, resulting in the worst loss of life at any motorsport event in history, and an incident in which Hawthorn played an unfortunate part.
