‘Brute Force’
Jaguar XJ12C Broadspeed British Leyland
Limited Edition Print : 200 pieces
Sketch, Oil and Digital Artwork.
Produced on 270gsm Matt Art Stock.
During the mid 1970s ETCC seasons, the BMW CSL 'Batmobiles' reigned with near total domination, fan's wanted more competition in the Group 5 class, and so too did BMW.Up step Ralph Broad & British Leyland with the Broadspeed Jaguar XJ12C.
In theory, challenging in the lightweight Bats with a vehicle with a size and weight comparable to a small bungalow, made little/no sense.
Over one lap, the Big Cat's blistering pace, helped by its 5.3l engine, promised that the CSLs now had a challenge.Alas come race day, cronic unreliability & oil pressure problems meant as many front row starts as the XJ had, they were matched by as many DNFs.
The artwork tries to depict some of the chaos of the Broadspeed's short life in motorsport, featuring pole-sitter John Fitzpatrick hammering uphill at the 1977 Nurburgring, sideways, with flames erupting from the 4 side exhausts. He is followed by the eventual winner; the BMW CSL of Gunnar Nilsson & Dieter Quester.
Fitzpatrick retired after lap 1.
The Broadspeed XJ12C is one of motorsport's greatest failures, but the fact is existed at all is a great thing, and ensures it cult status.
